The Museu nacional d'art de Catalunya, also known by the acronym of MNAC, is a museum in Barcelona and boasts one of the most important collections of Romanesque art in the world. Its headquarters is inside the Palau Nacional which stands on the Montjuic hill.
The museum was initially born in 1990 from the merger of two pre-existing museums, namely the Museu d'Art Modern and the Museu d'Art de Catalunya. In addition to the collections provided by these two museums, the numismatics, engravings and part of the Biblioteca General de Historia del Arte were added later; in 1996, also a new department dedicated to photography. Today the museum houses about 250,000 works and, in addition to temporary and itinerant exhibitions, it is also a place for the conservation and restoration of works of art.
