The Hayward Gallery is located within the Southbank Center art complex, one of the largest in Europe, from which it is managed.
Inside the Southbank Center it stands out for its brutalist-style architecture but it is certainly the most versatile exhibition space, capable of hosting a great variety of exhibitions.
It owes its name to the late Sir Isaac Hayward, former head of the London County Council. The Hayward Gallery does not have a permanent collection but annually organizes high profile international exhibitions by both established and younger artists.
For this reason, the Hayward Gallery is a reference point for the visual arts within the cultural landscape of the city of London and is visited annually by millions of people.
The gallery spaces have so far seen exhibitions by the likes of Andy Warhol (other voices, other rooms, 2009), Mark Wallinger (The Russian Linesman- Frontiers, Borders and Thresholds 2009) Guido van der Werve (2009),
Alexander Rodchenko (2008), Antony Gormley (Blind Light, 2007) Dan Flavin (A Retrospective 2006), Undercover Surrealism Picasso, Miro, Masson and the vision of Georges Bataille (2006) Africa Remix: Contemporary Art of a Continent (2005)
Universal Experience Art, Life and the Tourist's Eye (2005), Roy Lichtenstein (2004), Paul Klee (2002), Ansel Adams at 100 (2002), William Eggleston (2002)
