The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Nice (MAMAC) offers a dive into the adventure of art from the 1950s to the present day. Despite the singularity of personalities and practices, trends are emerging around three major issues: the act of appropriation and diversion of everyday life (with New Realism and Assemblage Art), the art of gesture and attitude (with Fluxus) and the renewal of the act of painting (with Support/Surface). This research is compared to European and American artistic creation over the last sixty years. The collection, rich in more than 1,700 works by 380 artists of 50 nationalities, finds its essential articulation in the relationship between European New Realism and the American expression of assemblage art and Pop Art. It also displays major works from the Italian scene and Minimal Art.
Two major figures of 20th century art constitute the heart of the collections: Yves Klein, notably thanks to the deposits of the Yves Klein Archives, and Niki de Saint Phalle which represents the most important collection of the artist in France (and the second in Europe) following its donation in 2001.
A NEW MAMAC FOR THE COMING DECADES
LE MAMAC OUTSIDE THE WALLS DURING CLOSURE
From 2024, MAMAC will undertake major redevelopment work to open up to the city and surrounding nature and meet the expectations of a 21st century museum.
During the requalification work of the MAMAC, the museum will bring its collection to life with large-scale projects “outside the walls” on an international and local scale from 2024.
