The Castle of San Giorgio is located in the highest part of the city of La Spezia, called the "hill of the Poggio". The castle is an ancient fortification of medieval origin from the thirteenth century. The castle is one of the most important in the area due to its imposing size and dominating position over the city. Today the Castle is the seat of the “U. Formentini ”consisting of finds from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. The museum is considered the oldest in the city with a 140-year history and is linked to local and historical traditions. Inside the rooms are set up: 19 statues - anthropomorphic steles in sandstone dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages; the artifacts found in the necropolis of ancient Luni and finally, objects of different origins that were donated by private individuals. Since 2000, the exhibition itinerary traces the history and cultural evolution of the finds on a chronological level. The Castle is home to cultural events, shows, temporary exhibitions and events especially in the summer.
