The Roman cistern

The Roman cistern leads the visitor through the underground Amelia, situated exactly under the Piazza Matteotti, corresponding to the ancient Roman Forum.
The impressive construction is composed by a big rectangular space carved in the limestone and consists of ten adjoining spaces covered by barrel vaults and the masonries are in opus incertum (stonework).
The complex is one of the best examples of the process of Romanization that has involved the town of Amelia around the 1st century B.C. The Romans built these ten huge underground caverns to collect rainwater. They are perfectly preserved as well as other components such as the opening system designed to let water in, the internal device to adjust the level of water and the system to drain water from the cistern. A brick in the floor is stamped with the name of the builder, Caius Atilus Fortunatus.
