Civico Museo Archeologico

The Archaeological Museum is located in an extraordinary architectural context, the former convent of the Monastery of San Maurizio, founded in the eighth century AD, where the history of ancient Milan still shows its traces. The Museum collects testimonies of different ancient cultures. Many works, of which a selection is exhibited in the routes dedicated to Ancient Milan, come from excavations conducted in the city since the nineteenth century. The heritage of the museum was then enriched over time by various works, from donations, purchases and deposits. The collections of the Museum are exhibited in different rooms depending on the cultural sphere of belonging. On the ground floor, after the first cloister dedicated to public buildings, there is the Old Milan section. The tour continues in the basement - section of the Gandhara Art and the Linving in Mediolanum section - and then in the internal cloister where the epigraphs of the ancient Milanese are exhibited next to the remains of Roman Milan (domus, walls and towers). In the new wing, reachable from the cloister, on the ground floor, next to the conference-teaching room is the section dedicated to Caesarea Maritima (Israel). On the first floor there is the early medieval section, on the second the Etruscan section, while the third floor is dedicated to the Greek section.
The Egyptian collections of Prehistory and Protohistory are exhibited in the Visconti Halls of the Castello Sforzesco.
