Description

Jan Saenredam drew this burin from a drawing by Hendrick Goltzius. The training in the workshop of the well-known master from Haarlem, which took place around the years 1589-1590, allowed him to develop an engraving technique declined to virtuosity, becoming his most gifted pupil. The press in question represents "the mess that Camillo makes, while Brenno weighs the gold". The figure of Marco Furio Camillo is highlighted, who arrived on horseback in time to save the honor of Rome during the siege of the Gauls commanded by Brenno; he holds the sword in his hand, ready to place it on the scales to raise the price of the gold ransom imposed on the Romans, according to the story made by the historian Titus Livy. The horizontal development of the scene and the isocephaly refer to the ancient friezes, proposing a classical scheme. It is evident, from the inversion of the letters "G" and "L" on the insignia that appear in the engraving, that the image is a counterpart to the lost design of Goltzius. The virtuosity of Saenredam is evident in the excellence of the results achieved in this engraving test. The modeling of shapes through planes of light and shadow reveals the artist's intent to achieve marble relief effects through the burin.
