Roman House

Roman House

The domus in via Varrone allows you to discover the most ancient phases of the history of Asti, through the suggestions conveyed by the archaeological excavation. Hasta was founded in the second century BC as part of the conquest campaigns carried out by the Romans in southern Piedmont, and began to take on a monumental appearance especially in the imperial era. The domus represents a discovery of truly exceptional importance: in addition to testifying to the evolution of the city through the centuries, it presents a floor mosaic of a unique quality for Piedmont.

The protagonist of the site is undoubtedly the mosaic that decorated the floor of the triclinium, or the dining room of this house belonging to a decidedly wealthy class family. The mosaic area measures 3 x 1.70 m, and features not only frames with geometric motifs made with black and white tiles, but also figures inspired by the natural world: ivy branches, fish and other sea creatures. The mosaic is made even more precious by the presence of decorations made with different types of colored marble.
