The Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation presents the Capriccio 2000 exhibition. Open from 15 April to 15 September 2019, the exhibition concludes the thirteenth edition of the Residence for young curators. The three curators selected for this edition are Rosa Tyhurst, Jeppe Ugelvig, Hannah Zafiropoulos.
In music, whim means a composition of a varied and free form with respect to rhythm and style. In painting, the term refers to architectural fantasies in which buildings and archaeological ruins of different geographical and temporal matrices coexist, united to form fictitious yet plausible landscapes. Starting from these shades of meaning, the Capriccio 2000 exhibition crosses all the cultures of electronic dance music in Italy at the turn of the new millennium - particularly the hardcore genre - proposing a sensorial landscape: a scenario composed of neon colors, gestures ritualized and indolent bodies, scattered among the debris of suburban life.
There are many examples of cultures linked to clubbing and raves that in the past have been canonized as spaces of resistance. The arrival of hardcore in the 90s instead introduces a much more nebulous and nihilistic aesthetic. Closely linked to mass consumption since its inception, hardcore quickly became one of the most popular musical languages of the early 2000s, spreading widely among the various youth scenes across Europe. Considered by most to be a genre with low intellectual pretensions and mostly folkloric, hardcore is the expression of a very peculiar cultural moment arising from often ignored European geographies.
