The show

For the fourth consecutive year, the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia renews its collaboration with the region's international music festivals, such as Umbria Jazz, Umbria che spacca and Trasimeno Music Festival and opens its rooms to the notes of great musicians .
For the occasion, from 28 June to 1 September 2019, the National Gallery of Umbria hosts the exhibition of Jimmy Katz, award-winning photographer of the most illustrious jazz musicians.
The exhibition, entitled Closed Session by Jimmy Katz, curated by Marco Pierini, collects 80 images signed by the great American photographer. In over two decades of activity, Katz has immortalized the main actors of the jazz scene such as Cassandra Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny and many others in the background of New York. In the studio, in clubs, on the streets, at work or at rest, the musicians are portrayed in their most intimate aspect, effectively imitating the improvisation process of jazz itself.
"The style that Jimmy Katz has developed over the years has become a distinctive trait in the iconography of jazz photography, comparable to the key of Louis Armstrong's trumpet or the sound of John Coltrane's sax", says Michael Cuscuna, famous record producer and scholar of jazz.
