Genova, Italy
Galata Museo del Mare is curated by Mu.MA (Istituzione Musei del Mare e delle Migrazioni, the Institution of the Sea and Migration Museums of Genoa) and run by Costa Edutainment. It’s the major maritime museum of the Mediterranean Sea and it allows to explore the history of navigation. The exhibition begins on board a Galley, where the “visitor-actor” can explore the Arsenal and find out more about the life of slaves, convicts and the so-called buonavoglia, paid volunteers. The exhibition goes on with the oceanic crossing of the Italian migrants on board steamers towards North and South America and with a pavillion exclusively dedicated contemporary migration – news of 2016. This is the history of navigation not only above, but also beneath the surface, thanks to the unique opportunity of visiting the Nazario Sauro submarine, the first Italian museum on a ship that can be visited still afloat. Visitors will also have the chance of virtually experiencing the worst nightmare of any seaman: facing the waves of a stormy sea on board a lifeboat, in the new Sala della Tempesta (Storm Room) with 4D system.
