The show

The exhibition revolves around one of the most emblematic paintings in the history of the collection of the National Galleries: the Vision of Sant'Andrea Corsini by Guido Reni, commissioned by the Corsinis for the canonization of the saint who lived in the fourteenth century, which took place in 1629 during the pontificate of Urban VIII Barberini.
Reni's masterpiece, now in the Uffizi, was housed in the halls of Palazzo Barberini until 1936, when it passed to the Corsini of Florence.
The exhibition is compared, for the first time, with both the replica made in 1732 by Agostino Masucci, which remained in via della Lungara and created for the mosaic version commissioned by Pope Clement XII, born Lorenzo Corsini, for the altar of the family chapel in San Giovanni in Laterano (1730), and with the painting preserved in the National Picture Gallery in Bologna, the work of Reni himself, which portrays the saint in other movements. This latter work will arrive on display after a careful restoration funded by the Barberini Corsini National Galleries.
The work from the Uffizi is a paradigmatic masterpiece of seventeenth-century devotion, with references to Raphael and the Ancient, in an alternative formula to the more thunderous Baroque of Bernini and Pietro da Cortona. Reni, after a confrontation with Caravaggio's naturalism, then moves towards a more and more rarefied painting, arriving in the last years of his career in precious chromatic accords of lilac and orange, such as those that can be admired in his second interpretation of Sant 'Andrea Corsini, ten years later.
The technical experimentalism of Reni, a painter who worked as much in fresco as in oil, on canvas, copper, touchstone and even on silk, will be analyzed in the second section of the exhibition. Already from the first half of the seventeenth century and throughout the eighteenth century his works, as seen with Masucci, were replicated in mosaic and tapestry.
From Palazzo Barberini comes the sleeping Putto by Reni with a fresco detached from the wall and still provided with its frame specially made by Cardinal Francesco Barberini in 1629, which attests to the exceptional collecting fortune of the master, and the particular predilection that the Barberinis had for him .
On display you will also be able to admire the mosaic version, the work of the specialist Giovanni Battista Calandra, of the Portrait of Cardinal Roberto Ubaldini by Reni and the Persian Sibyl in mosaic, now belonging to the collection of Palazzo Pitti in Florence, attested in the eighteenth century in the building in via of the Lungara. It is a masterpiece by Mattia Moretti who also worked on Masucci's cartoons, for the mosaics sent to Portugal.
