Bitonto, Italy
The National Gallery of Puglia “Girolamo e Rosaria Devanna” harbors a wonderful art collection in the heart of Bitonto, with works by famous artists from the 16th to the 20th centuries. Since 2004, the valuable collection has comprised 229 paintings and 108 drawings, donated to the Italian state by husband and wife collectors Girolamo and Rosaria Devanna, who wanted to give the public the chance to enjoy their collection. You can admire works by celebrated Italian and international artists, including Solimena, Luca Giordano, Poussin, and the 20th-century artists Beatrice Wood and Joseph Stella at the Gallery, divided into five sections, inside the 16th century Palazzo Sylos Calò.
Palazzo Sylos Calò has been on Italy’s Register of Monumental Buildings since 1902. A typical example of Bitonto’s 16th-century residential architecture, it has an internal courtyard and a base of large stone blocks, shaped in the Renaissance style. The portal, decorated with medallions featuring portraits of emperors, gives onto a quadrangular courtyard off which various rooms open. A double-ramped staircase leads up to the piano nobile and a broad connecting terrace.
