The show

Accademia Carrara presents an exhibition dedicated to Giacomo Quarenghi (1744-1817), an architect from Bergamo known for having transformed the face of St. Petersburg according to the dictates of the neoclassical school, at the court of Catherine II.

The itinerary, curated by Piervaleriano Angelini and M. Cristina Rodeschini, is divided into ten sections and illustrates the architect's modus operandi, his artistic skills as a great designer and the Italo-Russian-European culture of a fascinating interpreter of the 18th century it's 800.

Through a little less than forty years of work in Russia, the work of Giacomo Quarenghi has contributed significantly to giving shape to the design of the Empress Catherine II of Russia and then of his son Alexander, oriented to change the face of St. Petersburg for make it a European capital. The exhibition, consisting of a selection of about seventy sheets by the architect extracted from the Carrara fund, aims to be the ideal conclusion to the celebrations that under the aegis of the Municipality of Bergamo and the Quarenghi Observatory began in their conception in 2015. to culminate in 2017, the bicentenary of the architect's death.
Giacomo Quarenghi is the main figure of international profile that Bergamo has expressed. The architect's notoriety is sealed by the presence of his works in important institutional bodies - the Hermitage of St. Petersburg, the Pushkin of Moscow, the National Museum of Warsaw, the Stockholm Museum, the Galleries of the Academy of Venice and the Civic Collections of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan - to name but a few. The Quarengian collection of the Carrara is, with the numerous nucleus of drawings preserved by the Angelo Mai Civic Library of Bergamo, one of the richest, still little known and until now studied only fragmentarily. These are elaborates of a technical nature representative of the breadth of the typologies designed by Quarenghi, but together with his wisdom and refinement in the definition of precious interiors, the latter designs of great taste and high decoration, capable of highlighting the surprising talent of Quarenghi who had a solid artistic education.

The exhibition therefore illustrates, according to a rich sampling, the architect's modus operandi, his excellent skills as a draftsman in an inextricable succession.

"Giacomo Quarenghi architect in imperial St. Petersburg" represents the culmination of the celebrations for the bicentenary of his death, which began in 2015 under the aegis of the Municipality of Bergamo and the Quarenghi Observatory. The complex path developed by the Accademia Carrara saw in the first place the revision and restoration of the entire fund, its in-depth study with the creation of the scientific catalog that inaugurates the series of scientific publications dedicated to the museum's graphic collections.
