Description

Head of a mature man , marked by deep wrinkles on the forehead and on the sides of the mouth, tightened in a grave expression . The head has strong links with the sculpture of late Hellenism, as can be seen from the treatment of the eyebrows and wrinkles, which underline the softly plastic rendering of the model. The gaze is turned upwards and expresses a deep inner energy together with an idealization characterized by a certain pathos . Some assonances have been glimpsed with Silla's representations, but more likely it is a private representation due to a commission from the local ruling class, who preferred Hellenistic pathos in addition to Roman realism.
The profile, in the torsion of the head, underlines a realism in the physiognomic features, especially in the rendering of the wrinkles and in the slightly frowned and tense expression of the face, somehow alluding to the commitment dispensed by the character depicted in the civic sphere.
In the head-portrayed by Alba Fucens the veristic individualism of the face probably suggests the existence of sculptors' workshops in Alba Fucens itself.
