The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Potenza is located in the Santa Maria district. The Museum was created to protect, preserve and enhance the archaeological heritage of the Province of Potenza. The museum spaces preserve the finds from different areas of Basilicata, with particular reference to the Metaponto area. The exhibits of the Museum are arranged on two floors and are grouped following a chronological and topographical order. On the ground floor there is the collection that includes objects from the excavations of the Atella Basin and from Oliveto Lucano. In particular, the exhibition presents a reworking of Lucanian history. The first and second floor houses the artifacts found from the period between the Paleolithic age and the Roman age. Of great historical importance are certainly: the Corinthian bronze helmet found in Vaglio in 1291; the terracotta of Metaponto and the statuettes of Monticchio. A section of the museum exhibition is also dedicated to contemporary art with the works of the artist Giuseppe Antonello Leone. Leone is a surrealist artist who collected stones and reworked them in an aesthetic, ironic and ethical sense. The Museum today hosts cultural events, conferences, seminars and temporary exhibitions that refer to archeology and the ancient history of the city.
