Founded in 1890, it has undergone, over a century of life, experiments and transformations, up to the present structure of full enhancement of the great Roman sepulchral monuments that characterized the ancient city of Sarsina. It is located in the center of Sarsina and follows the ancient Roman civitas in the perimeter, known for being the birthplace of the famous Latin playwright Plautus around 254 BC. All the exhibits on display come from excavations and finds: the collections were gradually formed following the first discoveries of stones and inscriptions, traced starting from the sixteenth century, by local scholars and scholars. Systematic excavations in the area of the Necropolis on the right bank of the river Savio known as Pian di Bezzo date back to the 19th century, and especially in the first part of the 20th century, which led to the discovery of numerous sepulchral monuments of various sizes, culminating in the large mausoleums. , of Obulacco, Virginio Peto and Rufus. The itinerary winds through seven rooms on the ground floor (dedicated to the nineteenth-century collection, the necropolis and the city) and five rooms on the upper floor (dedicated to prehistory, funerary objects and the city domus). In addition to the steles, there are many sculptural finds of excellent artistic value, but among the unique pieces of the collection are the large figured mosaic floors such as the Triumph of Dionysus or the drunken Hercules from two large domus of the Roman city. Then among the objects: a beautiful multicolored glass cup (miraculously intact from an excavation) or the bronze with the rape of Europa, or the beautiful set of glazed ceramics from the table, typical of the Middle Adriatic area.
