Description

This pawn represented the war chariot in ancient times, called in Persian rokh (literally "camel with a tower equipped with archers") and in Arabic rukh, from which the now obsolete Italian term rocco derives, which later became the modern tower. It is characterized by a more flattened rounded shape, almost elliptical, compared to the other pieces, and by the classic upper termination with double cusp and hollow in the shape of the letter "V" in the central part, reminiscent of the typical (and later) battlements dovetail of medieval construction.
