The Civic Museum of Bolzano is located in the historic center of the city. The Museum is considered the oldest museum in South Tyrol, despite being partially closed since 2003 for restoration. The Museum was born in the second half of the twentieth century in the ancient medieval palace. The first floor and the tower house the museum's collections from private collections and donations. The Museum concentrates a very rich collection divided into thematic areas: archeology, art and Tyrolean popular culture. In particular, the sections of medieval, Gothic, Baroque and Tyrolean craftsmanship are of great interest. The exhibition itineraries also present about 200 works from the nineteenth century to 2000 and include stuccos, detached frescoes, wooden altars, statues, oil paintings, stoves, stove tiles, goldsmiths, folk costumes and graphic works. The collection concerning folk art includes objects relating to the domestic and family sphere. The museum houses a library specializing in archeology and local art. The ground floor of the museum is dedicated to temporary exhibitions and events in the city.
