The show

From 19 March 2021 Palazzo Strozzi changes its face through the intervention of JR, one of the most famous contemporary artists in the world, called to reinterpret the facade of a symbol of the Renaissance in Florence with a new site-specific work entitled La Ferita, which proposes a reflection on accessibility to places of culture in the era of Covid-19.

The installation is part of Palazzo Strozzi Future Art, a new program of the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation born from the collaboration with Andy Bianchedi in memory of Hillary Merkus Recordati. The initiative aims to create a platform for the art of the present, placing the promotion of creativity, the involvement of the public and support for the new generations as reference values for a relaunch of the cultural system through various initiatives that will see the involvement of Italian and international contemporary artists at Palazzo Strozzi.

28 meters high and 33 meters wide, JR's monumental installation offers a sort of visual gash on the façade of Palazzo Strozzi, which opens up to the vision of a real and imagined interior at the same time. The work, created with a black and white photographic collage typical of the artist's style, is built as an anamorphosis, an illusionistic game in which, observing from a precise point of view, they open up before the eyes, just like the inside a wound, different rooms of Palazzo Strozzi: the colonnade of the courtyard, an imaginary exhibition hall and a library.

By inserting iconic works of the Florentine artistic heritage and directly citing a real place such as the library of the National Institute of Renaissance Studies, JR proposes a direct and suggestive reflection on accessibility not only to Palazzo Strozzi but to all the cultural sites of the time of Covid-19. Palazzo Strozzi thus becomes the spectacular stage for a wound, symbolic but painful, which unites all the Italian cultural institutions and beyond: museums, libraries, cinemas and theaters, forced to limit or not be able to allow the public to access their spaces.
