In the historical heart of Naples, the Madre - museo d’arte contemporanea Donnaregina welcomes every day visitors of all ages and nationality in his 7,200 square meters that were restored and refurbished as a museum to a design by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Veira, and that include a library, a mediatheque and a bookshop/cafeteria. The museum of contemporary arts of Campania Region inaugurated its spaces in 2005 with site-specific installations by Domenico Bianchi, Francesco Clemente, Luciano Fabro, Rebecca Horn, Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Mimmo Paladino, Giulio Paolini and Richard Serra.
Since 2013 the Per_formare una collezione (“Per_forming a collection”) project, devoted by the Madre to the gradual formation of its permanent collection, combines archive researches with new productions. Nowadays the collection is is composed of 300 artworks, which include acquisitions, donations and long-term loans.
Cultural and research centre, the Madre museum produces and promotes exhibitions, books and project presentations, educational workshop, meetings with artists, events, concerts, performative programmes and activities aimed at social inclusion. Madre museum is the witness of a story that made Campania region a crossroads of contemporary arts, oriented to studying and documenting the past through contemporary sensitivity and languages and therefore able of acting in the present and outlining the future.
