The Provincial Numismatic Archaeological Museum of Catanzaro is located in the historic center of the city. The Museum was opened in 1879 and represents the oldest institution in Calabria. The Museum is located in the garden of Villa Margherita near the municipal library. + The museum collection is mainly composed of coins and archaeological finds found during excavations in the province. The collection includes more than 8000 coins, in silver and some in gold, ranging from the Greek period to the modern age. The collection of prehistoric and protohistoric archaeological material, formed following various private donations, is also of considerable interest. The prehistoric collection includes Stone, Iron and Neolithic tools and weapons. Other finds preserved in the museum are the bronze fragments of a Roman equestrian statue depicting Manioche Megonius Leo. The visit to the museum is enriched by the presence of interactive multimedia and audiovisual tools that accompany the visitor in the exhibition itinerary. Today the Museum is home to cultural events and private exhibitions.
