The Textile and Ancient Costume Museum is located in the historic center of the city of Spoleto. The Museum is located on the floor of Palazzo Rosari - Spada, one of the most important historically. Even today it is possible to admire the coffered ceiling and the original wall friezes. The Museum was founded following the donation of Lucia Portoghesi to allow the use of her private collection. The collection traces the history of costume and textile heritage from the fourteenth to the twentieth century, highlighting the decorative techniques. The collection consists of artifacts from all over Italy and abroad, including: France, England, Austria, the Balkan countries, Turkey, China, Russia and the United States. Certainly of great value are the red velvet and silk series and the Napoleonic-style male and female attires. In particular, the collection contains the empire-style dress that belonged to Alexandrine Bleschamps Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister-in-law. Other artifacts trace the popular history of southern Umbria and are inspired by the paintings of artists such as Giotto, Duccio di Boninsegna, Ghirlandaio and Leonardo da Vinci. The Museum hosts temporary exhibitions related to the theme and the museum collection.
