Capece Palace

Along Corso Umberto in Caivano, part of the ancient Via Regia that connected Naples with the Royal Palace of Caserta, stands Palazzo Capece. An architectural structure that still retains the essential features of the typical buildings of the nineteenth century, when even before it became the property of the Capece family, the building was a post office. At the time, the expeditions, as well as people, traveled by carriages and to ensure efficiency and speed of transport the post stations (located about 8km from each other) offered an indispensable support for the journey, giving the possibility to change horses and postillions, so that they maintained a high pace for the entire duration of the journey. The post stations were structured with several buildings, which housed stables for horses, sheds for stagecoaches, farrier shops, inns for the refreshment of the people.
It was in 1897 that the Post Office was taken over by the Neapolitan Capece family, the architect was Maria Libertini (1848-1921), who was twice widowed after the death of Giorgio Capece (1826-1872) and Giuseppe Capece (1853- 1888). Thanks to the inheritance derived from her marriages, Maria Libertini detects a complex of palaces with an immense garden, which obviously have undergone substantial changes over time, and first founded Palazzo Capece and then the Capece Chapel (1899), designed by the engineer Vincenzo Russo and located in the cemetery of Caivano.
After the death of Maria Libertini, first Pietro Capece (1881-1956) and then Giuseppe Capece (1907-1986), husband of Nora Cafaro (1908-1996), daughter of Cavaliere Alessandro Cafaro, mayor and first mayor of Caivano. Four children are born from their marriage: Elvira, Alessandro, Bianca and Pietro. The two sons Alessandro and Pietro inherited the palace, the latter known in Caivano as Doctor Capece, took over the entire structure and currently Palazzo Capece is inhabited by the same heirs.
