Description

The Triumph of Bacchus represents one of the greatest pictorial climaxes within the ducal residence of Sassuolo. Conceived as the main summer residence by Francis I starting from a pre-existing building, the palace was adapted according to the diktats of Baroque art and architecture. Both the exterior is sober and functional, the interior is a riot of stuccoes and frescoes, in order to immerse the user in another dimension, separate and distinct from the city, from the obligations of the official court. The Gallery of Bacchus, full of suggestions from the famous Gallery built fifty years earlier by Annibale Carracci in Palazzo Farnese, is a celebration of earthly pleasures and the abundance of the earth, of which Bacchus, god of the grape harvest and intoxication, is the highest minister.
