The Ducal Palace at Sassuolo is one of the most important Baroque palaces in northern Italy. The current structure was commissioned by Duke Francesco I d’Este in 1634. The architect, Bartolomeo Avanzini was tasked with transforming the Este’s castle into a modern suburban dwelling for the court. Paintings, stuccoes, sculptures and fountains, still today, give the impression of a pleasure palace, one that has long remained unknown by the general public. After many years as a site of military administration and after complex restorations, the Palazzo Ducale came under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
