The show

Following the conclusion of the long and delicate restoration of the Royal Crib, the Genoese palace offers the exhibition of the entire complex of the monumental Genoese crib made up of ninety figures.

The exceptional ensemble, commissioned by the House of Savoy to the Genoese artist Giovanni Battista Garaventa in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, highlights the author's mastery of a cultured and refined language in the wake of the best Maraglian tradition. It consists of figures between 40 and 70 cm tall, mostly mannequins in carved wood and costumes of extraordinary quality and richness, gilded borders and embroidery, silver details. In addition to the Holy Family and angels, it includes the Magi, a crowd of shepherds and the usual menagerie of horses, sheep, goats and herds.

Already in 1988 it was returned to its author, refuting an ancient attribution to Maragliano, Pittaluga and Ciurlo and, on the occasion of Christmas 2017, a first selection of 30 mannequins that emerged from the last restoration was exhibited in the Ballroom of the Royal Palace. .

Born in Genoa in 1777, Garaventa, an artist with an academic background, was mainly active as a carver of processional chests and sacred images, as a restorer of ancient sculptures and a modeler of decorative and ephemeral apparatuses.
