Palazzo Sinesi is a nineteenth century building where one of the archaeological museums belonging to the Polo Museale of Puglia resides. Occupied since the Bronze Age , Canosa consolidates its position between the 7th and 6th centuries BC. C., to become, together with Arpi, one of the most important centers of Daunia . Between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, evidence of its prosperity is offered by the chamber tombs, used by the families of the indigenous elite , and their rich grave goods . of an important diocese. Sabino , powerful guide of the Canosian church in the middle of the 6th century, promoted an intense activity of construction and renovation of religious buildings distributed around the city in order to create a protective wall . Built in the last decade of the 19th century, Palazzo Sinesi is equipped with 8 exhibition rooms and various rooms on the ground floor and in the basement for the deposit of archaeological material for an area of about 700 square meters. The collection consists of artifacts from archaic tombs and rich Hellenistic hypogea , which testify to the customs and mentality of the Canosian society and the high quality of local craftsmanship between the sixth and third centuries BC. on display are the vases of subgeometric Daunian production made in Canosa in the Archaic period, found, together with metals and ambers that attest to the presence of exchanges and trade, in the tombs of Vico Pasubio and via Legnano (VI - V century BC). of the craters there are the grave goods referable to some depositions of the Hypogeum of Vico San Martino (IV-II century BC) composed of Apulian red-figure ceramics and other prestigious goods such as weapons and metals . equipment of the Varrese hypogeum, one of the most important chamber tombs of Canosa, which for several generations belonged to a prominent family of the wealthy class. Among the materials, in addition to the apul i red-figure vases characterized by monumental dimensions, the decorative richness of the representations and the narrative commitment of the scenes, an important nucleus of polychrome and plastic vases called canosini, characterized by images painted in tempera with a wide choice of colors, among which pink predominates, and the presence of applied decorative elements.
