Museo Pietà Rondanini

The Museum

The Pietà Rondanini Museum is located inside the ancient Spanish Hospital, in the Cortile delle Armi of the Sforzesco Castle. After lengthy restoration work on the building, on 2 May 2015 the new museum dedicated to the Pietà Rondanini was inaugurated, in the sober and evocative setting of the architect Michele De Lucchi.

Last, unfinished work by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), the Pietà Rondanini is the old artist's testament and meditation on death and the salvation of the soul. Together with the Pietà there is a coin by Leone Leoni depicting the bust of Michelangelo, cast in the late sixteenth century, and the bronze portrait of the sculptor, taken from his wax death mask, made by his pupil Daniele da Volterra.
