National Picture Gallery of Sassari

The National Picture Gallery of Sassari

The National Picture Gallery of Sassari is located in the historic center of the city and houses a rich and articulated collection of paintings, over four hundred, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day and which also include a notable section of graphics.

The museum, inaugurated in December 2008, is located inside the former Jesuit College of Canopoleno, a historic building built between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century by the archbishop of Oristano Antonio Canopolo. Passed to the State in the first half of the nineteenth century, in the 90s of the twentieth century it underwent a restoration and adaptation intervention that made it possible to make available, in a large and prestigious space, a rich state artistic heritage received through donations and bequests .

The considerable collection of the Pinacoteca owes its formation to important names in patronage, among them Giovanni Antonio Sanna, entrepreneur and politician, who donated archaeological finds and paintings to the city.

Among the main works, you can admire a polychrome wooden crucifix dated to the end of the 13th century. However, the most significant are those of Sardinian artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Giovanni Marghinotti, of whom the Pinacoteca has the largest collection in Sardinia, Antonio Ballero, Filippo Figari, Giuseppe Biasi, Carmelo Floris, Pietro Antonio Manca, Mario Delitala , Stanis Dessy, Eugenio Tavolara, and the collection of graphic works by Giuseppe Biasi and Stanis Dessy.
