The Medici Villa and the Museum of Still Life are located in Poggio a Caiano, a small town in the Pistoia province. The Villa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 as an example of Tuscan Renaissance architecture. The Villa was designed by Giuliano da Sangallo, a well-known architect of the Italian Renaissance, for Lorenzo the Magnificent in 1492. The building was built on the top of the hill to stand as a symbol of architecture over nature. The Villa underwent many passages from family to family, up to the Savoy family who made it a country residence. The interiors testify to the noble passages through the differences in style. In particular, on the main floor the majestic Sala di Leone X we find the furnishings of the late nineteenth century and the cycles of Tuscan frescoes of the sixteenth century. The frescoes were made by artists of the caliber of Pontormo, Franciabigio, Alessandro Allori and Andrea del Sarto, painters of Renaissance Florence. The second floor of the Villa houses the Museum of Still Life which houses more than 200 paintings from the Medici collections. The paintings on display, as the name of the Museum suggests, mostly depict still lifes with fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. The exterior of the Villa consists of a garden with a large nineteenth-century lemon house with the monumental sixteenth-century stables.
