Villa Panza, known throughout the world as a center of contemporary art, has origins that date back to the eighteenth century, when the Marquis Paolo Antonio Menafoglio identified the ideal place for his country house on the top of the Biumo hill, in Varese. The Panza Collection originated in the 1950s, when Count Giuseppe Panza began to collect 20th-century American works of art, inspired by the themes of light and color. Among these are the site-specific works of the environmental art gallery, which coexist in harmony with the historical environments of the Villa and the collections of African and pre-Columbian art. Emblematic in this sense is the wing of the cottages, which now houses an amazing gallery of site-specific environmental works of art, almost a temple consecrated to the luminous element. Among these stand out the works of Dan Flavin, of which the collection boasts the largest concentration of works perpetually exhibited, James Turrell and Robert Irwin. Home to international exhibitions, Villa Panza offers a sensory experience, even for the little ones, with a dedicated calendar of activities. Here it is possible to spend an entire day immersed in art, among the 33,000 square meters of park enriched by works of Land Art and the "Luce" Restaurant. Villa Panza, donated to FAI in 1996 by Giuseppe and Giovanna Panza di Biumo, is a eighteenth-century villa located on the Biumo hill in Varese, where the Collection is kept and is the seat of exhibitions and educational activities.
