Spello's Villa of Mosaics

The Villa of the Mosaics of Spello

An exceptional archaeological treasure in Umbria

Ten rooms with amazing mosaic floors : geometric decorations, wild and fantastic animals, human figures and life scenes. Stone carpets of rare beauty.

In the heart of Umbria, Spello's Villa dei Mosaici is an exceptional archaeological treasure. Unique in its kind, the residence of the imperial age still preserves refined mosaic floors and traces of frescoes and stuccoes on the walls. The new modern and multimedia museum structure allows you to explore all the charm of this villa with 3D reconstructions, multimedia stations and a dedicated App. Spello's Villa dei Mosaici was discovered in July 2005, just outside the walls of Spello, in the locality of Sant'Anna, during the works for the construction of a public car park.

Among the rooms, the large triclinium stands out, the banquet hall , with a scene of wine pouring in the center of the floor. Other characters, arranged symmetrically holding vegetable elements or attributes related to the world of agriculture, depict the Seasons. The mosaic is completed by wild (panthers), domestic (wild boar, duck, deer, etc.) and fantastic (marine tigers) animals. The identity of the owner is unknown. The study of the mosaic in the center of the main room, with a scene of wine pouring, has probably led to the hypothesis that it was a matter of a winegrower.
