The show

Immersed in the Novara countryside, from 14 May, Cascina IDEA - the rural complex transformed by Nicoletta Rusconi Art Projects into a place dedicated to art and experimentation - presents “Death, what? The sun's corpse will roll on”, solo exhibition of Sarah Entwistle (1979) curated by Elsa Barbieri.

If in the circle of a thought - Alda Merini wrote - "sometimes I rest dreaming", Sarah Entwistle assumes the idea of circularity and non-linearity as the formal cornerstone of the residence project. Architecture, spirituality and intellect are the keywords that allow us to read “Death, what? The sun's corpse will roll on” and, more generally, the artistic research of Entwistle, fascinated by the malleable nature of materials and by the historical practice of the architecture of spolia, or rather the appropriation of materials in new forms. The reuse of building material, taken from previous constructions that are no longer in use, is common throughout human history, but the phenomenon of reuse took on precise artistic characteristics in the context of Roman architecture of the late ancient period and later throughout the medieval era. Unlike the ideological interpretation, which explained the phenomenon in terms of triumph over the enemy, as well as the pragmatic one, which underlined its economy, Entwistle's spolia must be read in the key of a becoming, in nature as in human affairs, according to a cyclical pattern.

Circularity and non-linearity, together with the polarity between past and future, ruin and rebirth, are expressed in the path of “Death, what? The sun's corpse will roll on” through a new corpus of wall and floor tapestries and sculptures. Like a set of different habitats, Entwistle transforms each room of the exhibition space into an articulated labyrinth - to be understood as a structure - to determine a new way of being present and relating to the work, even trusting one's own sense. The invitation to look beyond the project in its current meaning is emphasized by the choice of colors which, in general, in architecture have the ability to excavate and expose a design rationality, often encroaching on a high poetic value. Entwistle's choice of red, blue and white is, intentionally, a visual gateway to discover those flows of forces, often invisible, which are concentrated before, during and after the moments of creation.

Referring to the irrational, the invisible and the energetic, Sarah Entwistle with “Death, what? The sun's corpse will roll on” affirms the concept of regeneration, as well as rebirth, reincarnation, resurrection and transformation, as a powerful force against personal and cultural determinism.
