The Cavaleriemuseum in Amersfoort is a unique military museum in the Netherlands dedicated to the long history of Dutch cavalry, from the 17th century to modern armored vehicles. Housed within the historic Bernhardkazerne facilities, the museum is divided into two distinct buildings that offer a complete journey through past and present.
In the Sint Jorisgebouw, visitors discover historical uniforms, weapons, medals, scale models, and paintings, following a chronological narrative that spans from the era of the horse to the transition to mechanized vehicles. On the second level, the theme "Wheels & Tracks" delves into the modernization period: bicycles, motorcycles, tanks, and armored vehicles that transformed the cavalry.
The Landsverkgebouw, dedicated to the first Dutch armored vehicle (the Landsverk M36/M38), houses a vast collection of restored and operational combat vehicles. Outside, around the buildings, tanks and armored vehicles on rails are displayed, often used in films and reenactments.
The museum is typically visited in 1-2 hours and requires a security check at the entrance of the military base, where it is necessary to show an ID document. The staff is knowledgeable and available, able to enhance the visit with historical insights.
Suitable for military history enthusiasts, families, and school groups, the Cavaleriemuseum also offers guided tours, a themed shop, and the opportunity to observe the restoration workshop by appointment.
