Huis Marseille is a museum in Amsterdam, located at Keizersgracht 401. In September 2013, the museum was expanded to include the building near Keizersgracht 399, giving it a total of fourteen exhibition spaces, including the light well in 399. The museum offers a rich and varied exhibition program with changes about four times a year. Since the expansion in 2013, there have been many opportunities to show the museum's collection alongside the exhibition. The collection is mainly composed of important modern photographs (national and international).
Huis Marseille chooses photography that focuses on a specific visual language and is characterized by a passionate spirit of inquiry, as part of a continuous investigation of cutting-edge innovation. Furthermore, photography at Huis Marseille has social relevance and interfaces with the changing spirit of the times.
Huis Marseille is the opposite of a white cube: the fact that the museum is housed in two monumental 17th century canal houses has a great influence on the 'organic' way in which the exhibitions are experienced in the various spaces. At the same time, these authentic rooms are so clear and open that the appearance of the photographic works per se is not hindered, but enhanced. Most of the exhibitions at Huis Marseille are developed and produced specifically for these spaces.
