Description

Found by Alvaro Tracchi near Ponte Buriano (AR), the antefix represents a female head with a headdress that seems to recall the Phrygian cap. In the past, the apotropaic figures placed on the roofs of buildings served to protect and ward off evil spirits from the most important places. In Etruscan times, gorgon heads, divinity faces or palmette shapes were made and positioned on the roofs of the most important buildings such as temples or princely residences. Unfortunately the poor conservation conditions of the find do not allow to recognize the represented figure. Certainly, however, the discovery of the surface of this object has confirmed the hypothesis of the presence of an important ceramic production center in Ponte Buriano.
