Description

Portrait of Antinous, a young favorite of the Emperor Hadrian, who died at a young age in 130 AD. and then deified. The work consists of an ancient fragment - recognizable in the bust and in the left and rear part of the head - integrated in modern times. The physiognomic peculiarities of the young man are known by the numerous sculptures and monetary images spread throughout the Roman Empire. In modern times Antinoo's iconography became known especially after the discovery at Villa Adriana in 1735 of a relief that represents it, now preserved in the Albani collection. Starting from the intuition of Egyptologist W. Raymond Johnson, in 2013 it was possible to identify the missing ancient part of the bust of Antinoo from the Boncompagni Ludovisi collection with a marble fragment preserved at the Art Institute of Chicago.
