Description

Group of about one hundred lamps found in the natural cave where a source of sulphurous water, called "delle Ninfe", flows at the foot of Mount Sellaro, north of the Sibari plain. These are lamps produced in series with molds ("matrix") of various shapes, with a central disk decorated with subjects of different spheres: religious sphere and myth (Athena, Hercules, Pegasus, erotic), triumph (Winged Victory, crowns of leaves and garlands), theater (masks), gladiatorial games and animal world, often with symbolic meaning. There is no shortage of discs with plant motifs or completely without decoration. Furthermore, some of them bear the trademark of the factory that produced them. The presence in the cave of a source of sulphurous water and the high number of lanterns suggest that the lanterns can be part of a votive deposit, which lasted for at least two centuries.
