Description

Group of about one hundred oil lamps found in the natural cave where a source of sulphurous water flows, called "delle Ninfe", at the foot of Mount Sellaro, north of the Sibari plain. These are oil lamps produced in series with molds ("matrix") of various shapes, with a central disc decorated with subjects from different fields: religious sphere and myth (Athena, Hercules, Pegasus, erotes), triumph (Winged Victory, crowns of leaves and garlands), theater (masks), gladiatorial games and the animal world, often with symbolic meaning. There is no shortage of discs with plant motifs or completely without decoration. Furthermore, some of them bear the trademark of the factory that produced them. The presence in the cave of a source of sulphurous water and the large number of oil lamps suggest that the lamps may be part of a votive deposit, which lasted for at least two centuries.
