The tapestry in question belongs to the series of the Acts of the Apostles and indirectly derives from the cartoons executed by Raphael for the tapestries of the Sistine Chapel. The representation summarizes two moments: the scene of Saint Stephen being led to martyrdom, high in the background, among the trees, and the martyrdom of the saint depicted below, in the foreground. The martyr has fallen to his knees while four stoners, in agitated attitudes, are hurling stones at him, and a fifth is bent over to pick them up from the ground. On the left, high in the background, a group of judges on horseback observes with grim looks the scene unfolding before their eyes. The frame depicts the four elements air, water, earth, and fire, represented respectively by birds, fish, mermaids and tritons, flames, and a landscape with animals and buildings. At the corners, Neptune and Flora divide the Earth from the Fire.
