The show

From 22 April to 2 July 2023 in the spaces of the Civic Museum it will be possible to visit two exhibitions which intend to enhance the heritage of the Cabinet of ancient and modern prints of Bagnacavallo, the true flagship of the city's collections.

THE CARE OF THE ANTIQUE. The restoration of the Bagnacavallo prints , curated by Davide Caroli, displays a selection of antique prints , chosen from the more than 100 that have recently been restored by the specialists of the Laboratorio degli Angeli in Bologna, thanks to the precious contribution of the Emilia Region. Romagna through the regional law 18/2000. The works have been the subject of an important conservative intervention, which is given an account of in the exhibition itinerary, which has refurbished the sheets with cleaning treatments, compensation for tears and gaps and reinstallation on suitable supports, thus making them usable both to be exhibited and to be studied live. The selection also includes the two best known and most precious burins of the collection, the Nativity and the Saint Jerome in Dürer's studio, already exhibited in 2019 in the monographic exhibition "The privilege of restlessness", together with other prints never presented before in the rooms of the museum, of mythological, gender and religious subjects, including some reproduction engravings of famous paintings by Raphael, Guercino and Guido Reni.

The exhibition ORIGIN AND META. A journey through the cities of the print cabinet , curated by Martina Elisa Piacente, is part of the theme dedicated to the landscape which has accompanied the city's cultural offer since 2022 and which in 2023 focuses on the urban landscape . Among the more than 13,000 works conserved in the Prints Cabinet of the Museum, recurring ones are those dedicated to urban views, which allow us to grasp the reflections that some artists have carried forward on the theme and to deepen the symbolic values attributed to the concept of the city. The exhibition, which presents a small selection of these views, accompanies the visitor on a space-time journey from some cities of history and myth that have become real symbols in the collective imagination, up to the contemporary metropolis and so common cities as characterized by a well-defined identity to contemplate, discover, experience.

The two exhibitions intend to enhance the heritage of the Cabinet of ancient and modern prints , established in 1990 with the aim of giving visibility and an adequate place of conservation to a precious and substantial donation of ancient prints left to the Municipality of Bagnacavallo by the Parma collector of Bagnacavallo origins Emile Ferroni. Thus began, thanks also to the collaboration and stimulus received from friends and connoisseurs of the art of engraving such as Giuseppe Maestri, Giorgio Trentin, Pier Carlo Santini, an intense exhibition and research activity around the various chalcographic and woodcut techniques. Not only a place dedicated to conservation, therefore, but a promoter center for initiatives aimed at spreading the culture of engraving, and the two initiatives are grafted right into the wake of this tradition which will allow the discovery of some of the most precious and interesting prints usually archived in the warehouses of the museum.
