closed Artists' Film International - XI Edition

The show

Curated by Sara Fumagalli and Valentina Gervasoni

GAMeC continues to participate in Artists' Film International, the prestigious network dedicated to video art which, since 2008, has involved some of the most important international contemporary art institutions, with artists from all over the world.

For the eleventh edition of the review - whose theme is “gender” - the curators Sara Fumagalli and Valentina Gervasoni have selected the artist Jacopo Miliani (Florence, 1979). One of the three rooms on the first floor of the museum will be entirely dedicated to Miliani, which will host the projection of the video work Deserto (2017) and TEOREMA TEOREMA TEOREMA (2018) , continuation of the project dedicated to Pasolini.

Deserto reflects on the possibility of talking about multiple identities through the invention of a new language. The desert, the scenario that closes the films Teorema (1968) by Pier Paolo Pasolini and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) by Stephan Elliot, was used by the artist as an ideal meeting place between the two protagonists: 'Guest (an enigmatic stranger, both angelic and demonic, who seduces an entire middle-class family) and Bernadette (a transgender woman), both played by the same actor, Terence Stamp. The desert is evoked by Miliani as a place where the sand never takes on a precise and definitive shape.

An enigmatic body, long red lacquered nails, a new sign language, a voice, a text, dance and photography: these are elements that give life to a dense web of visual stimuli where verbal and visual language are intertwined with the sensory and sensual lexicon .

The special project TEOREMA TEOREMA TEOREMA, on the other hand, is the ideal development of Deserto. In this new video production - specially created in collaboration with GAMeC for this edition of Artists' Film International - Miliani lays the foundations for a further reflection on the famous film by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

The protagonist of the video is the Parisian performer Matyouz, dancer, Master of Ceremony and commentator of the most important Vogue Contests in Europe.
Vogueing is a style of contemporary dance that arises from the imitation of the plastic poses and gestures of the models that appear in fashion shows or in glossy magazines such as the well-known fashion magazine Vogue, from which dance takes its name. Having entered mainstream culture in the early 1990s as a characteristic of Harlem's underground, gay and transgender environment, the origins of this style date back to previous decades.

Matyouz's voice and interpretation contextualize Pasolini's paradigms, recalling the idea of “interview-truth” with which the 1968 film opens; as in Deserto, also in TEOREMA TEOREMA TEOREMA the performer's hands tell a story and, albeit in a different form, we find a fusion between verbal and visual language.

Deserto and TEOREMA TEOREMA TEOREMA will be visible at GAMeC for the duration of the exhibition, as part of the calendar of screenings that will present the works proposed by the other participating institutions: Fundación PROA , Buenos Aires; Whitechapel Gallery , London; Istanbul Modern , Istanbul; Belgrade Cultural Center , Belgrade; Video-Forum of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (nbk) , Berlin; Museum of Modern Art , Warsaw; MAAT - Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology , Lisbon; Bonniers Konsthall , Stockholm; Tromsø Kunstforening , Tromsø; Ballroom Marfa , Marfa (Texas); Hammer Museum , Los Angeles; CAC - Contemporary Art Center , Vilnius; Project 88 , Mumbai; Hanoi DOCLAB , Hanoi; Para / Site , Hong Kong
