The show

From 4 December 2023 to 1 April 2024, Accademia Carrara presents Titian and Aretino. The portrait of a protagonist of the Renaissance , a new exhibition project which sees the prestigious Portrait of Pietro Aretino by Titian displayed in Carrara, on loan from the Uffizi Galleries in Florence .

There are numerous works by painters, engravers and sculptors who have consigned to eternity the face of Pietro Aretino (1492 - 1556), one of the most loved and at the same time discussed intellectuals of the sixteenth century but, in the collective imagination, the figure of the man of letters coincides without no doubt with the portrait painted by his friend Titian kept in the Palatine Gallery of the Uffizi Galleries. The Accademia Carrara project therefore starts from this work to delve into one of the most fascinating figures of the sixteenth century: The thrice very clear and divine man / the famous immortal Pietro Aretino , non-conformist author, diplomat, polemicist and first to practice the criticism of art as we understand it today, offering the public a reflection that starts from Titian's painting and expands thanks to a series of works that range from graphics to medals to publishing, all arts well known by the writer, called to celebrate him.

The Portrait of Pietro Aretino painted by Titian in 1545 is an extraordinary work both for the quality of the execution, an example of his mature, powerful production, sketched in the pictorial material, at times unfinished, and for its destination. Pietro Aretino is in fact the subject and commissioner of the painting with the precise desire to donate it to Cosimo I de' Medici in order to receive his protection, a self-promotional operation in all respects, certainly uncommon for the time. Titian celebrates Aretino at the pinnacle of his personal success, combining, in a very successful synthesis, representativeness of status and intimate knowledge of the person portrayed, giving life to a powerful depiction of the obstinate will put into play by the writer in promoting his figure as an intellectual through a conscious and even unscrupulous use of one's image.

The exhibition aims to evoke this story by combining the canvas painted by Titian with other famous testimonies of Aretino iconography such as a series of famous medals by various artists, which mark the entire course of his career and demonstrate how portraiture is intrinsic to Aretino's reflection about art. To complete the journey, two particularly significant printed volumes, within the writer's endless production, which recall two of the most famous events in Aretino's life: the Sonnets lussuriosi , written in 1525, after having seen the inventions of Giulio Romano engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi, known only through a single subsequent printed copy; the staging of the comedy La Talanta written by Aretino in Venice and staged with the collaboration of Giorgio Vasari during the Carnival of 1542.
