DDR Museum

The DDR Museum is a Berlin museum dedicated to the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik: German Democratic Republic, more commonly: East Germany). It is located opposite the city's cathedral. Although the museum was only inaugurated in 2006, it is now one of the most visited museums in the city. The GDR Museum offers an insight into life and events in the former GDR during the period of the German division. In the museum there are two sections: the first is related to the daily life of citizens, in which it is possible to find a reconstruction of a typical East Berlin apartment, with typical furniture and a TV that broadcasts the typical programs of the Soviet era. In the kitchen you can observe the foods and products that were available at the time, such as the well-known Spreewald gherkins. All around are busts, plaques, signs and flags. More than 300 inhabitants of the former East Berlin helped to create the museum's collection, donating personal effects and mementos. These include an Erika typewriter, furniture such as the Karat Schrankwand, a Stern radio, and of course photographs and clothing. The second section is dedicated to the world of bureaucracy of the time: an interrogation room and the offices of the Stasi, the secret police of the GDR, are re-proposed and rebuilt. The museum is an interactive museum: it offers many activities, video and audio recordings, doors and drawers that can be opened and touched.
