Museum Berggruen

The Berggruen Museum is a Berlin museum dedicated to modern art. It is located opposite the Schloss Charlottenburg castle, in a former barracks for the officers of the royal guard built between 1851 and 1859 in the neoclassical style. Next to it is a twin building, also a former barracks and now home to the Bröhan-Museum, a museum of Art Déco and Art Nouveau works. The two buildings are now connected by a glass gallery. Inaugurated in 1996, the Berggruen Museum takes its name from the German collector Heinz Berggruen, who donated his collection to the city of Berlin to make it a museum. The museum collection includes numerous works by famous artists of the early twentieth century: there are over one hundred works by Picasso, which show the entire evolution of the artist, from his origins to his latest works; then there are over 60 works by Paul Klee, dated between 1917 and 1949; about twenty works by Matisse, sculptural groups by Alberto Giacometti and finally several of the African works of art that inspired various artistic movements of the twentieth century. In 2007, after the collector's death, further works were donated by the family, significantly expanding the collection, so much so that expansion works were required, which made it possible to reopen the museum in 2013. The museum also regularly organizes exhibitions. temporary.
