From 20 November to 6 April 2026
Graphic Japan. From Hokusai to Manga brings to Bologna, for the first time in Italy, a major exhibition that visually narrates the fundamental stages of Japanese graphics in a journey that from the Edo period (1603-1868) leads up to the present day. This is the cultural proposal by MondoMostre which, for autumn 2025, will present in collaboration with the Civic Archaeological Museum of the Civic Museums Sector of Bologna, a new chapter on Japanese graphic creativity, following the great success of HOKUSAI HIROSHIGE in autumn 2018.
The exhibition, under the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Region and with the support of the Consulate General of Japan in Milan, continues the relationship between Italy and Japan deepened in the context of Expo Osaka 2025, which will end on October 13, 2025, and of which Rossella Menegazzo is the Cultural Manager of the Italian Pavilion. As a symbolic continuation in Italy, the exhibition project takes over: Graphic Japan will extend the focus on Japanese culture to Bologna from Thursday, November 20, 2025, to Monday, April 6, 2026, with a focus on graphic design and visual arts.
The exhibition project, curated by Rossella Menegazzo with Eleonora Lanza, arises from a critical need combined with the cultural curiosity to investigate the reasons for the global success of Japanese graphics, characterized by an inseparable connection between sign and design that, starting from ukiyo-e prints - the so-called "images of the Floating World" - has led to artist posters and contemporary manga.
