The exhibition of Anita Garibaldi's dress, on loan from the National Museums of the Republic of San Marino, represents a significant and peculiar occasion within the program that the Brescia Museums Foundation has dedicated to the figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi, investigating it through multiple perspectives and analyzing its historical role, fortune in the visual arts, material cult, and public memory. After the exhibition The Expedition of the Thousand: Memory and narrative in the pictorial reportage of Giuseppe Nodari and the course "Garibaldi: Beyond history. Icon, myth, narrative," the narration expands and focuses on the extraordinary figure of Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, known as Anita Garibaldi, through the exhibition of the dress she left in July 1849 in San Marino during the dramatic retreat towards Venice, undertaken after the fall of the Roman Republic. The garment has the ability to evoke, through the evocative power of material evidence, that courageous woman, whose existence has become a symbol of active participation and intense civil dedication. The object allows us to tell the Garibaldian epic by offering an intimate glimpse into human and everyday aspects, such as the moving solidarity that Anita received from local communities during her escape.
