From 28 October to 15 February 2026
The Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia, from October 28th to February 15th, 2026, welcomes the monumental portrait of Giovan Carlo Doria on horseback by Peter Paul Rubens, a masterpiece from the Royal Museums of Genoa. The initiative, curated by Gianluca Zanelli and Marie Luce Repetto, with the collaboration of Palazzo Spinola, is part of the PTM ROUND TRIP program, which sees the Brescia Musei Foundation transform the "departures" linked to loan requests into "arrivals" of guest works: an opportunity to receive works from museums around the world in the halls of the Pinacoteca.
Giovan Carlo Doria (1576–1625) was an important Genoese nobleman and patron, belonging to one of the most influential families of the Republic of Genoa in the 17th century. Deeply embedded in the aristocratic and cultural circles of his time, he was portrayed by leading artists of his time, such as Anthony van Dyck and, indeed, Peter Paul Rubens. The painting was created around 1607, during the Roman stay of the great Flemish painter, who gave the nobleman an imposing solemnity, made vibrant by the emphatic movement of the horse and the dog at his feet. In general, it is a powerful assertion of authority and ambition, which helps to perpetuate the image of the Genoese nobleman as a figure of power and prestige.
