In the second half of the 19th century, running a business, practicing a skilled trade, or, least of all, being an alpinist was far from easy if you were a woman. Photography—considered “dangerous” for the chemical processes involved and the weight of the equipment to be carried—and mountaineering were primarily male domains.
Nevertheless, there were some brave women from wealthy families who did not let this stop them. They became alpinists and photographers. However, because it was not common for women to have such professions at the time, they often published their pictures under a different name - their husband's name, for example. Many women also worked secretly in men's photo labs. Some women were almost forgotten because they were rarely known by their own names. Only sometimes small advertisements were found in newspapers showing that they worked as photographers.
Four special women were selected for this exhibition. We will tell you about their lives......
