Cardiff Castle has its origins in Roman times, but has undergone a surprising transformation over the centuries. Although the original core of the castle was built by the Normans in the 11th century, over the site of a 3rd century Roman fort (of which the remains of the wall remain). In the Victorian era the building was renovated following the Gothic style and providing it with eye-catching and extravagant furnishings: today the structure stands out for its marble, gilding and spectacular wooden structures. A visit to Cardiff Castle allows the discovery of the pNorman Keep or the Norman Keep, the Firing Line museum which is dedicated to the memory of Welsh soldiers and the tunnels used as air-raid shelters during the Second World War. Various guided tours and events are also organized in the fortress.
